Time Warner has now officially confirmed that the next game in the Batman Arkham series will be released later this year.
This information has come out in a transcribe of their Q4 2012 earnings call, which was recently posted on Seeking Alpha. It was during this meeting that this game was, very stealthily, confirmed. Here is a quote from CFO John K Martin;
“We expect [digital home video revenue] to grow close to 20% in 2013. And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise.”
It was rumored last year that the developer of the previous Arkham City and Arkham Asylum games, Rocksteady, would make the next game in the series a prequel with inspirations from the Silver Age of comics. However, it has been claimed by VG247 that Rocksteady will not be taking part in the development of Batman Arkham 3.
This would be real loss to the series, especially following the announcement from writer Paul Dini (writer for both Batman Arkham games previously) that he will not be working with Warner on the next Batman game.
