Call of Duty’s last few outings have been set in the near future, primarily featuring evolved technology and weapons from our present. This won’t be so for the 2016’s Call of Duty by Infinity Ward, several sources cite the game will be set in the distant, far future and will even have space combat.
The rumor originally sprang up on NeoGaf, when well known industry-insider Shinobi602 responded to a user regarding the fate of the series.
shinobi602 said “This makes Black Ops 3 feel like the stone age. Metaphorically of course.” His follow up post stated “Very far future. Space combat. Full on sci-fi.”
Since then Eurogamer have also supposedly independently verified this information with their own sources. Shinobi himself is a pretty reputable leaker, and last year was tied to information concerning to Call of Duty Black Ops 3, which turned out to be totally accurate.
How Infinity Ward decides to handle this is rather interesting – as parallels will immediately be drawn to Microsoft’s Halo series. If Call of Duty 2016 is handled correctly, it may be the shake up that the series needs to bring it in a new direction. Previous entries such as Advanced Warfare and Black Ops have added new gadgets and even jump packs.
But it will be curious if COD 2016 breaks away from “traditional” feeling guns, and how gun play is handled. Hopefully we’ll see full on space combat, and not just ‘on rails’ turret sections.
