A legacy has ended today, as Game Trailers officially announced via social media that they would be “closing down today”.
There was also comment from the editor-in-chief Brandon Jones on Twitter, who said, “Today is the last day of GameTrailers. I wish it wasn’t so.”
The Game Trailers Twitter account also posted saying, “After 13 years, GameTrailers is closing down today. Thank you for your continued support over the years. It has been an adventure.”
This annoucement did come a little bit out of left field, as they had been releasing their usual offerings of reviews, trailers and guides right until now. Many of us probably have fond memories of Game Trailers, as they were one of the early runners of the then blossoming video game coverage thing back in 2002.
The Facebook annoucement of the closure also mentioned the legacy that GT is leaving behind, citing the success of let’s plays, reviews and walkthroughs.
They said, “We’re proud we helped bring this world into being. That is the legacy of GameTrailers.”
Some may have seen this coming after GT was bought by Defy Media back in 2014. Defy almost immediately imposed layoffs which were still taking place last year. Defy have quite a few publications under their wing, including The Escapist, which some would argue has been stripped of everything interesting aside fom Yahtzee.
Defy have yet to comment on the closure of GameTrailers.
