Well, it looks like this is it for Spark Unlimited, the guys behind Lost Planet 3.
Not that that’s all they’ve done, Spark are also the developers behind Legendary and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. Sadly though, it looks like for them, the end is very nigh. According to a former employee, they have laid off all of their staff and will no longer be making any more games.
This was first noticed a sharp eyed user over at NeoGAF, who spotted that SparkĀ had their assets for sale on asset liquidation siteĀ CMA Auctions. And, it just to crush that last little ember of hope, it was confirmed by John Butrovich, chief technical officer at Spark Unlimited. He said that, “it’s the end of Spark as a game developer.” He also went on to say that their in development free to play game, as well as their other projects, were all cancelled, which naturally lead to them shutting down as a game developer.
What it seems like, though, is that the company itself will still exist, just no longer as a games developer. They have gotten rid of all their gaming related staff, cancelled all their projects, but from what John said, it seems as if they will still be working together on things unrelated to gaming. For example, they are a trustee on a film by the name of Nightmare Code.
Not exactly surprising, when you consider that pretty much all of their titles have bombed in terms of sales. Lost Planet 3 is probably the least horrible of the lot, and that’s saying something, given how linear and uninspired that game is. Well, I guess all we can do is wave goodbye to them and wish them all the best for the future.
