As I’m sure most of you know, all of Apple’s laptops all support the same kind of MagSafe magnetic adapter and have done so since it was introduced in 2006. However, Apple could soon have some competition in this particular field, as a newly public patent application seems to suggest that Microsoft could be designing something similar.
The application, which was filed last year, and describes a very similar connector to Apple’s device. However, unlike Apple’s MagSafe, it also delivers data as well as power.
However, while patents such as this do give a good indication of what a certain company is up to, it is by no means set in stone that these plans will come to fruition. As many of us have seen, it is more than possible for the patent to simply lay dormant and gather dust for many years.
Also, Apple applied for a very similar patent a few years back, so Microsoft may not even be successful in their application. So, we will simply have to wait and see what happens, but it is at least likely that a bit of a fight between the two companies is imminent.
