Given that there are two main characters in Naughty Dog’s upcoming title The Last of Us, you would think that this is an absolutely perfect opportunity to have a very badass co operative mode in there, but the developer has made a point of stressing that no, this will not be happening.
This may just be with the main campaign though, so don’t scrap those gaming night plans just yet. Game director Neil Druckmann specifically said that “not [have] co-op within the main campaign.” However, he did go on to say that there will be some multiplayer element involved. “We are supporting multiplayer with The Last of Us”, he said, “but we’re not ready to talk about the details of how multiplayer will be implemented.”
So, perhaps we will be looking at a separate story from the main campaign, maybe something in the style of Portal 2 where it was ever-so-slightly connected to the main story, but not actually directly involved with it. We also may be looking at different characters than who we see in the main campaign. I certainly hope that this is what they have in mind (or something similar) because what I would not like to see is the main characters featured in extra content separate from the main campaign that you cannot access unless you play with someone else, either locally or online.
Many people don’t really play multiplayer, and such is their right, so I will be waiting with interest to see what happens.
