As Christmas approaches, Sony show off their new Slimline 500GB PS3
PS3 hits 6 years old, and 2 new PS3 versions are the consoles ‘celebration’ of sorts.
Many would argue that this Christmas will be the final one that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3 consoles will be in the spotlight. Pretty much everyone knows by now that the PS4 and gen gen xbox are waiting in the wings, and of course Nintendo’s own Wii U is readying itself for launch. The new console always does well at Christmas, but that doesn’t mean Sony is just going to sit there and say to Nintendo “Hey, you know what, you guys go ahead, this holiday season is yours”. Oh no, they are going to fight back the best they can.
They are releasing a fairly gigantic (at least in console terms) 500GB Playstation 3 slimline console, with a 120GB version being released on October 12 (in Europe). While the requirements for 500GB might seem reasonable to many (with the release of so many downloadable games, DLC and of course, movies) the 120GB one is a mystery. Sony however responded to this by saying ‘It’s upgradeable with a non-proprietary drive, so a standard laptop drive. You need a cheap and cheerful little caddie just to support it but it’s very upgradeable.’

The playstation 3 is now six years old, and the Vita has been out 7 months (once again, in the EU). Sony are saying that it has done fairly well, while others would say that its sales have been less than they’d have wanted.
Sony have said previously they are committed to ensuring that the Playstation 3 continues to receive support even after its successor (the Playstation 4) is released. There are titles like the Last of Us on the horizon, but for Sony it will now be about pushing towards the mainstream and trying to scrounge every sale that it can this year away from Nintendo’s anticipated Wii U.
