According to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Nintendo is planning on bringing it’s content to the smartphone market.
This news was helpfully translated by Dr Serkan Toto, who is known as a reasonable source of gaming industry news. According to Nikkei’s sources, Nintendo will be unveiling their plans for the mobile market to their investors during a briefing session, which will take place on Thursday.
Supposedly, Nintendo are planning on using smartphone devices and tablets to market console games, by releasing both demos and videos of Nintendo console exclusives through a dedicated app.
Just to clarify, they will not be releasing mobile versions of their console titles on iOS and Android, what they are simply hoping to do is convert people using those devices via free demos, which will then encourage them to play the full title on the 3DS or Wii U.
As you may expect, both the app itself and the content available there will be completely free. Seems like an interesting idea, although I do feel Nintendo are missing a trick by not having their classic old school games made available on mobile platforms.
