You may have heard about the Nintendo’s Creator Program. If you haven’t heard about it, close this page, pretend you never heard the name, put your fingers in your ears and scream “la la la la la la” until you feel safe again, and then go on with your life. If you have heard about it and you are aware of the problematic nature of its existence and even airing your concerns to the community, that’s great and please keep at it! But, to you who have actually singed up to the said program and have agreed to share your money with Nintendo; stop any other things you may be doing, take a seat, and let me try and convince you how you are potentially helping Nintendo and potentially all other publishers to take money from you for advertising on their behalf.
I actually thought that Nintendo may have been concerned about the possibly of high misrepresentations of their games, and creators bad mouthing the company for untrue or inaccurate statements. But Nintendo have the highest quality games out there. It’s very rare to find any issues with Nintendo products and game breaking bugs, and if so they address the issues quickly. It must not be hard for them to hit the creator with a claim. But that’s a different story in itself.
Nintendo are placing themselves within a gap that should not be ethically feasible for them to do. They are placing them between you and YouTube for playing their games (not all games by the way), and you will be restricted to playing Nintendo ONLY games that are acceptable.
Reggie is currently looking at you consumers with a smile on his face, whilst simultaneously taking a pistol and repeatedly shooting himself in the foot, and glancing at sales number trying to figure out why they aren’t increasing. Why don’t Nintendo see that all other publishers have embraced the power of YouTube and saw the benefits of free advertisement?
See, Nintendo doesn’t understand the YouTube economy and thinks that content creators are “stealing” income that they could potentially be making by thinking others believe that playing the game is identical to watching a game. So, to Nintendo 1000 views on a video are lost sales due to it being played by someone else, when it is in fact the opposite. I have purchased most of my games either to watching a friend or watching YouTube videos. The funniest thing about this is that you could possibly understand this logic in a way if it is a purely story driven game, but Nintendo are the least story driven and more about pure gameplay which needs an own personal play through to best experience their game.
I wish I could pay for an advertiser to show off a product I want to sell and give me a cut of his earnings every time he had someone “view” the product… not “purchase”…”view”.
One of the worst things out of this, and one that myself and others are worried about, is that if you do join this program and it does get quite a reasonable amount of applicants, then others will follow suit, then it will become the norm. Publishers like Ubisoft and EA will love to earn your ad revenue for you playing their games. They would love to get an extra income and filter your video to what only they would like to been seen, thus; not allowing negative reviews or gameplay with glitches, etc. This would make you be blinded thinking a game may be near perfect, but Instead ,may be a pile of garbage and you will most likely buy it because what you see may not a real representation. You can sprinkle glitter on s**t, but all in all its still s**t.
So where does this leave the content creators: out of pocked, restricted and left with a Nintendo channel only. I don’t see anything positive there, do you?
Soon every publisher will create a separate program which will cause you to then have to search under each separate publishers program to find a video you may wish to see, this video may not 100% represent the actual true impressions (depending on the publisher), plus contentment creators will receive less for equal work.
If you and others continue to allow this to happen, join just to be able to play Nintendo games on your NEW re-branded channel (and yes you will lose everything else that’s not Nintendo), and this system works for Nintendo (they are making money so why won’t they be happy), then YOU will be keeping this stupid program alive and it will benefit no one! If you pretend it doesn’t exist and ignore it, it will go away 🙂 .
