The Forest, a survival horror game designed for the Oculus Rift, has had a set of screenshots released online.
The Forest, which is being developed by indie studio SKS Games, is an open world survival horror adventure which places surviving your environment as highly as escaping your enemy. Players will have to do things such as chop wood in order to make camp, start a fire to keep warm, scavenge food to prevent starvation and even plant seeds and grow crops.
The player will also have the ability to build traps, as well as having access to strengthening their shelter, building a safe haven to protect them from the monstrosities that roam the night.
The developer, SKS Games, said that The Forest will have players “enter a living, breathing forest with changing weather patterns, plants that grow and die. Tides that roll in and out with the day/night cycle. Below ground, explore a vast network of caves and underground lakes.”
The Forest is scheduled to have an alpha version released early this year, with a full version planned for later on in 2014.
I, for one, am excited by the very idea of a first person survival horror using the Rift, and one that has actual survival elements.. count me in. This project is sounding ever intriguing, and I just hope that they manage to nail the immersion, loneliness and scare factor of the horror part of the game. But, seeing as it’s on the Rift, they may not have to work too hard to scare the crap out of people.
