Sombra has been rumoured for Overwatch for ages now, but we may have had an early leak of Sombra’s appearance as well as some details on the upcoming Halloween event.
Now, while I think this leak is pretty legit, given that it looks very, very convincing – it’s very possible that it’s a well executed fake, or even Blizzard teasing us with a red herring. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the supposed Sombra leak.
An image was posted in various locations online, and claims to show off Sombra, “one of the world’s best and most notorious hackers” in the flesh. Judging from the image, it appears to have been leaked from an internal Blizzard website and also says that Sombra “will be hacking her way into the build later tonight”, but we have no way of knowing when this image was created.
The images also shows some small snippets about Sombra’s background, but a lot of the text is cut off. It says something about her childhood and the Omnic crisis, and it appears she had connections to the Los Muertos gang in Mexico “until she attracted too much unwanted attention and had to go underground.” You may remember the Los Muertos gang from the Soldier 76 animated short.
It also appears she works for the Talon organisation, placing her in the same group as Reaper and Widowmaker. Below, you can see two images – one with the text showing this information, and one that shows Sombra in much clearer detail.
According to the Overwatch subreddit, we have a “Russian OW group” to thank for these images. Also coupled with the potential Sombra leak, we also have details on a new gameplay mode for Overwatch. Apparently, players will be tasked with protecting a castle (Eichenwalde?) from “Zomnics and Dr. Junkenstein’s evil allies”.
As for “Dr. Junkenstein”, that’s likely referring to leaked images of an upcoming Overwatch comic book, which shows off Dr. Frankenstein Junkrat, witch Mercy, and Jack-O-Lantern Reaper.
Side note: if I can’t get witch Mercy and Dr. Junkenstein as skins, I’m going to be upset. Back on topic, this also calls back to an earlier leak about the Halloween loot boxes, with Xbox One owners reportedly seeing Halloween loot boxes on the Xbox store. Hopefully, we can buy these event skins with in-game gold this time.
What are your thoughts on Sombra’s design? Myself, I quite like it. I am intruiged by her interesting, cyber punk-ish design, as well as that cool looking Omnic looking hand. Of course, what really matters are her abilities. From the look of her Uzi, it seems she may be another assault character, but only time will tell.
