There’s a new Playstation 4 firmware update in town, and if what insider’s are saying is true, the PS4’s 2.04 firmware update will have a few rather nice updates for game developers.
Tidux is a fairly well known industry insider, and while he isn’t always right, he does have a pretty good track record. So, let’s assume for the sake of argument this information is accurate, what does the PS4’s 2.04 update bring to the table?
Sony have been rather cagey regarding a lot of the PS4’s firmware and SDK, and Tidux says that their stance hasn’t changed. Citing that “Sony believe that there is no profit in talking about it official, then suddenly they must “prove” the performance update”.
Sony has a list of what people (we) want. they also have a small list of new features, many don´t think of.

It would appear that while regular users will enjoy a few features in the 2.04 update, the real nuggets are inside the system themselves. Just what the firmware (and possible) SDK update does is anyone’s guess. If you’ve been a regular reader or viewer of RedGamingTech, you’ll know we’ve been delving into the Xbox One’s SDK leak (that’s part one, part two and part three) rather deeply, and have documented many of the rather changes. While some information was known (such as the ability for developers to reduce the GPU reserves for Kinect), other information was shrouded in mystery. We learned that in the Xbox One’s development history, and even into the early part of the consoles retail life, there were two graphic drivers, we learned Microsoft have recently unlocked the potential of a 7th CPU core, and even allowed additional memory bandwidth to be given to developers.

Additionally, just like the PC, Microsoft have improved the performance of the drivers of the GPU and other components. To put it simply, the SDK of 2015 is considerably leaner, unlocks more features and easier to handle than the release.
For the PS4, who knows exactly what Sony have done. It’s likely the PS4 has undergone dozens of small little tweaks, all the way to possibly huge tweaks that if were revealed would fill gaming news websites headlines.

So, hopefully we’ll get a bit of info leaked out – or something will emerge at GDC 2015. That’s if we’re super lucky!
