A future Playstation 4 firmware update will allow PS4 owners to dim the lights on the Dualshock 4 lightbar.
This news came about in a somewhat unusual way, where Shuhei Yoshida actually spoke out to correct a tweet made by GameTrailers journalist Geoff Keighley which claimed that gamers could turn off the lightbar off entirely.
This makes sense, considering that the Dualshock 4 is used in numerous flagship PS4 titles to track the controller’s position during gameplay. It’s also been used to rather interesting effect in games such as Thief, which used the Lightbar to indicate how visible you are to enemy guards.
Even though some might like the ability to turn it off, I don’t see that happening. This is a fairly decent compromise though, and will hopefully help the PS4 controller battery last that little bit longer.
