So, the end of the Steam Summer Sale is finally upon us. So what deals does the 22 July have in store for us? Personally, I think the offerings today are a little weak, but let’s take a look and see what is on offer…
Space Pirates and Zombies (£1.74 – 75% off!)
This is a very indepth strategy action RPG, with a rather… shall we say, eye catching title. It has some rather pretty graphics, good controls and also, some very nice ships and customisation options involved. It also has some voice acting by a rather well known YouTube name in it, and I’m sure many of you will recognise the dry, cynical tone as soon as you hear it.
Jagged Alliance – Back in Action (£7. 49 – 75% off!)
Eeeerrrrch. That was my genuine reaction when I saw the graphics of this game, especially since it was released this year. Graphics aren’t everything of course, and it is an indie game, but I have seen some much better looking indie games than this. Also, with a dodgy metacritic score of 62/100, I would say avoid at this price.
Double Fine Bundle (£5.74 – 75% off!)
I can only really comment on one of the three games included in this pack, and this is Psychonauts. I bought that game back in the day for my PS2 (after watching Yahtzee’s review of it) and was blown away. It is absolutely bonkers, but it is a highly original, and highly entertaining title. Costume Quest and Stacking I can’t really speak for, but when you are dealing with Double Fine, you are undoubtedly going to be in for a highly unusual treat. I say get the pack, but if you just want to get one – get Psychonauts. It’s also reduced and will cost the grand total of £1.49.
Football Manager (£4.99 – 75% off!)
I neither know much about football, or about Football Manager. I do however know that this is a pretty ridiculous discount on a game I know rates very highly with everyone who plays it and has snagged a very nice metacritic score of 84/100. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to buy this game, now is your time. Go forward, to destiny!
Splinter Cell Conviction (£3.24 – 75% off!)
This one of the very few deals tempting me this time around, since I already own Psychonauts,as it is a very good deal indeed. I know that Crimson rates this very highly, and it also seems to score well on most of the reviews it’s received as well. The SC games are usually pretty solid, and from what I have seenof Conviction, it’s definitely worth picking up, especially at this price.
Indie Bundle XI (£6.99 – 75% off!)
Another rather weak showing for the Indie Bundle in my view, with only Hydrophobia: Prophecy seeming interesting enough to actually play. You may disagree however, so the other games included are ORION: Dino Beatdown, Star Ruler, Waveform and World of Goo. Personally I would say either avoid or just picking up Hydrophobia by itself.
Operation Flashpoint Complete (£8.74 – 75% off!)
Both OF: Dragon Rising and OF: Red River are included in this pack, so it’s not a bad deal, but I would still be tempted to call this one an avoid. The OF games aren’t rated all that well and don’t strike me as anything particularly special, but that just may be my dislike of war games talking. This is a fairly decent discount, so if you’ve been wanting this collection, then there is no better time than now to pick it up.
Bioshock Franchise Pack (£6.98 – 75% off!)
To be honest, the pack itself is pretty bad in terms of savings. You literally save no money by buying this, than if you had bought the two games (Bioshock 1 & 2) seperately. If you’ve somehow managed to miss out on Bioshock, then I say get the first one. It is a fantastic game, and one of the few FPS games I actually like. It has a great storyline, setting, and it also has a very tense atmosphere. It doesn’t quite slip into horror game territory, but it brushes pretty damn close to it at times, as the atmosphere is very tense and unnerving.
Bastion (£2.86 – 75% off!)
Any self respecting action RPG fan must play Bastion. It is gorgeous to look at it, epicly fun to play, and a pleasure to listen to. You can also get the soundtrack edition for £4.23, and I highly recommend doing so. Bastion has an absolutely cracking soundtrack, and the music rates very highly in my best OSTs of all time. Overall Bastion is an amazing game, and I urge you to purchase it. It is the only real standout game in today’s deals.
